At first he apprenticed as a muralist at the Cleveland Art Institute, later he was a set designer for Paramount. He met his wife, Bernice Goodspeed, a silver designer in Mexico City in 1934. He was part of the artistic life of the time that included Diego Rivera, Frieda Kahlo, Noguchi, and Tamayo. He later lived in the mountains of Taxco where he worked for the next 50 years.
